Welcome to the Black Hills National Forest. Recreational
opportunities abound on this 1.2 million acre "island in the
plains". The Forest has something for everyone: campgrounds and pinic
areas; cool lakes and streams known for thier trout fishing;
310 miles of hiking, biking, skiing and riding trails; 350
miles of snowmobile trails; and wonderous scenery in any season.
The name Black Hills comes from the Lakota Sioux words "Paha Sapa",
or "hills that are black." The Black Hills includes rugged
rock formations, canyons, and gulches, meadows and parklands,
managed and old growth forest, unique caves, and historic
mining camps and railroads.
